Kelowna, get ready to feel it in your chest. On Friday, September 25, Red Bird Brewing is turning our North Kelowna patio into the Okanagan’s best live music venue for one unforgettable night, as two of Canada’s most innovative Indigenous electronic artists, Shub and Handsome Tiger, take the stage in a co-headlining set from 8 to 11 PM.

This isn’t just background music for your pint. This is powwow-step, bass-heavy, genre-bending, dance-floor-igniting sound, delivered by artists who are actively redefining what Indigenous electronic music sounds like on the world stage. True to Red Bird form, expect it loud where it counts and surrounded by the kind of community energy that only happens when a room full of strangers ends up dancing together.

For over a decade, Shub (formerly DJ Shub) has been reshaping the landscape of Indigenous electronic music. A founding member of the JUNO-winning A Tribe Called Red and the artist who coined the genre “powwow-step,” Shub built his signature sound in Fort Erie, Ontario, where he grew up Mohawk and a member of the Turtle Clan of the Six Nations of the Grand River. He noticed that the 140 BPM tempo common in dubstep matched the tempo of the grass dance songs he heard at community socials growing up, and powwow-step was born.

His track “Electric Pow Wow Drum,” produced with A Tribe Called Red, has racked up over 30 million streams globally. After going solo, Shub released the JUNO-nominated PowWowStep EP, scored the Canadian Screen Award-winning film The Grizzlies, and had his single “Indomitable” picked up as the theme song for Sacha Baron Cohen’s Emmy-nominated series Who Is America? In 2022, he won the JUNO Award for Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year.

Now performing under the name Shub, he arrives in Kelowna touring Heritage, a two-part body of work he calls his most ambitious project yet, a bridge between generations, blending hip-hop, ’90s-era IDM, dub-infused trip-hop, and heavyweight bass with the powwow rhythms he grew up with. Featuring collaborations with artists like DJ Paul and Natasha Fisher, Heritage isn’t trying to sit in one genre. As Shub puts it: “It’s the sound of where I’m at right now.” Expect a set that’s raw, cinematic, and unmistakably his.

Sharing the stage is Handsome Tiger, an Anishinaabe Métis and North African music producer and DJ based in Vancouver, BC. A staple of the West Coast bass music scene, Handsome Tiger blends traditional sounds from his heritage with Indigenous and contemporary electronic bass music, fusing sound system culture with global club influences into sets built to move a crowd. His résumé includes sets at Bass Coast, Shambhala, Envision, Lightning in a Bottle, Mutek, and Texas Eclipse, some of the biggest names on the North American festival circuit, and he remains a dedicated supporter of Vancouver’s underground electronic community.

Together, Shub and Handsome Tiger bring a night of genre-blurring, culture-forward, bass-driven sound to Kelowna that you won’t find anywhere else in the Okanagan this fall.
