Funk, Disco, and Dancing Shoes Required
Kelowna, get ready to dance. On Thursday, September 24th, Red Bird Brewing is thrilled to welcome Toronto’s The Free Label to our stage, with West Coast instrumental fusion act SØURDØPE opening the night. This is one of those shows that’ll make you want to get your groove on, so grab your tickets early and start lacing up those dancing shoes.
The Free Label is a six-piece band out of Toronto that has built its reputation on a sound that’s part 70s disco, part 90s R&B, and all high-energy funk. Since their breakout 2019 single “All Night,” they’ve toured North America, Europe, and Australia, building a global fanbase one sweaty, sold-out room at a time. They’ve graced stages at Mariposa Folk Festival, Laketown Shakedown, and the Calgary Stampede, sharing bills with names like T-Pain, Aqua, and Lupe Fiasco. Their 2023 European tour saw them open for soul legends Incognito and R&B virtuoso Mono Neon across the Netherlands, England, and Luxembourg, and their music has landed on radio waves as far away as Indonesia, Turkey, and the Czech Republic.
In 2024, the band dropped their sophomore album, Songs for Sienna, earning them a spot on the Amazon Music Billboard in Toronto’s Dundas Square and widespread acclaim for tracks like “Blue Suede” and “Change Your Mind.” Their live performances have racked up more than 15 million views online, and in the studio they’ve worked alongside Grammy-nominated talent including saxophonist Braxton Cook and producer Aaron Paris, whose credits include Drake, Kanye West, and Kali Uchis. On stage, The Free Label is known for natural chemistry, technical skill, and an energy that pulls the whole room onto the dance floor. Come expecting to move.
SØURDØPE
Opening the show is SØURDØPE, an instrumental fusion act steeped in the rhythms of the Pacific Northwest. Drawing influence from acts like The Budos Band, Yussef Dayes, Lettuce, Khruangbin, Bonobo, and Flamingosis, SØURDØPE blends warm horn melodies, a grooving rhythm section, and sparkly guitar textures into a sound that ebbs and flows like the tides along the BC coast. With trumpet and saxophone glowing over fluid, ever-shifting beats, this is a set built for getting lost in, and the perfect warmup for the funk-fuelled night ahead.
This is the kind of night Red Bird was built for. The beats will be bumpin’, the tap list will be flowing, and the dance floor will fill up fast once The Free Label gets going. Whether you’re a longtime funk fan, a first-time listener, or somewhere in between, this show just might win you over.
Grab a table, grab a pint, and get ready to move. Tickets for The Free Label with SØURDØPE are on sale now, and this is one Thursday night in Kelowna you won’t want to miss. Get your tickets before they’re gone
