Off-brand twang meets next-gen indie energy.
A little country. A little weird. A lot of fun.
Skinny Dyck brings his genre-bending, off-brand twang to Red Bird on Thursday, April 9th for a free live music night from 7–9pm. Joined by indie pop/rock outfit Rise Overrun, this double bill delivers a blend of laid-back storytelling, creative curveballs, and high-energy guitar work.
Resist the urge to laugh at Skinny Dyck — or don’t. That’s kind of the point. The playful alias of Western Canadian artist Ryan Dyck, Skinny Dyck has carved out a sound that drifts comfortably between traditional country roots and left-of-centre indie charm. His latest full-length album Easygoing earned a 2025 Western Canadian Music Award nomination for Album of the Year, following 2022’s Palace Waiting, praised by Exclaim! for distilling “the spirit of wide-cut country.”
Now, Dyck leans even further into a hybrid sound — think Mac DeMarco meets Merle Haggard, like a second mezcal negroni before dinner. Mixed by Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Bonnie Prince Billy), Easygoing finds him stepping slightly away from the strict traditions of country while keeping just enough twang to feel like home. It’s nostalgic without being stuck, playful without losing depth — music that feels like an extended stay at an old lake cabin where the rules are looser and the nights stretch long.
Rise over Run
Opening the night is Rise Overrun, an indie pop/rock band representing the next generation of Western Canadian talent. Formed through a mix of university connections, high school friendships, and unexpected online encounters, the band brings together an eclectic cast of personalities and a guitar-driven sound to match. Their live shows are energetic, playful, and built to be experienced up close — packed with new songs, fresh ideas, and enough hooks to keep the room buzzing.
Two distinct sounds. One Thursday night.
Free entry. Cold beer. Good company.
