Dance-Punk Chaos meets Kelowna
Red Bird welcomes Pastel Blank to the stage on Thursday, November 5th, for a free show that proves you don’t need a cover charge to catch some of the best live music in Kelowna.
Pastel Blank is the project of Montréal-born, now Victoria-based songwriter Angus Watt, brought to life by a rotating cast of collaborators from Montréal, Vancouver, and Victoria. Equal parts solo project and full band, Pastel Blank blends the sheen of a disco ball with the sharp angles of post-punk, landing somewhere between danceable and delightfully unpredictable. Their debut LP, Unmade In Minutes (Paper Bag Records), was produced by Connor Head and Angus Watt and mixed by Austin Tufts of BRAIDS. It builds on the lo-fi guitar rock of their first EP with thick percussion, woozy synths, oddball samples, and bursts of sax and flute, all locked into an unshakeable groove.
Recorded at Catalogue Studios in Victoria, the album was built to capture the sweaty buzz of the band’s live show, and that’s exactly what Red Bird is getting. Drummer Oliver Hollingshead and percussionist Hanum Yoon-Henderson (congas, cowbell, shakers, and more) keep things moving, Eric Kilian’s synth sweeps colour the spaces between angular guitar lines, and Luvy Vishek’s ethereal vocals balance out Watt’s percussive yelp. The songs themselves dig into modern anxieties, screens, burnout, masculinity, self-control, but the live show turns all of that into a release.
As the band puts it, this is dance music for people who don’t know how to dance.
Whether you’re a Red Bird regular or discovering Kelowna’s best pizza and beer for the first time, this is a free night out worth building your Thursday around.
