A decade on the road, one free night at Red Bird
Flowshine is rolling into Red Bird Brewing with The Houses on November 19th, and you’re invited to settle in for two hours of big harmonies, sing-along hooks, and emotive storytelling.
This is a free live music event, so bring your friends, your coworkers, your neighbour, or just yourself!
Flowshine has spent over a decade carving a path a little left of centre. Their love of adventure and of bringing people together through music has taken them from their home in Calgary to often overlooked corners of the country. Their openness to experimentation has led them to mould a distinct brand of indie/alternative music, built on big harmonies and sing-along hooks. Their songs showcase strong musicianship and relatable storytelling, and they often feature musical guests who add their own signature to the Flowshine sound.
As the band puts it, “We want our music to be fun and emotive; we want people to jump in our canoe and let us guide them down the river, showing them things they’ve never experienced.”
Flowshine’s four EPs, You Goddess (2022), Gets Me Going (2018), Soak Me Like A Wave (2015), and Mountain Queen (2012), have all charted on campus and community radio from British Columbia to the Maritimes. The band was a regional finalist in the CBC Searchlight competition (2016) and a featured artist in the Untapped Alberta (2013) concert and radio series.
They’ve also spent thousands of hours in a van, playing pubs, clubs, theatres, cafes, campfires, farm fields, basements, community centres, festival stages, street corners, and roadhouses, from Dawson City, Yukon to the heart of Halifax, NS. Now they’re adding a Kelowna brewery to that list.
The Houses
Kicking off the night is The Houses (Where We Grew Up), an indie rock and noise pop duo from Kamloops, BC. Rob Wikstrom (vocals and guitar) and Sean Schneider (drums and synths) blend hazy shoegaze textures, noisy guitars, and melodic, off-kilter pop sensibilities, landing somewhere between atmospheric slow-burns and bursts of alternative rock energy.
Their releases include Welcome to Kitimat (2021, Divine Bovine), Killer (2019), and Dying (2019). Together they move from dreamy, down-tempo psychedelia and folk-tinged vocals to expansive noise rock, with unconventional song structures and a distinctly independent spirit. It’s music that’s noisy yet melodic, atmospheric yet unpredictable.
The duo is also gearing up to release their new single, “Never Ever,” the next chapter in their sound and a lead-in to a new record in the making. Get here early for a sneak peek at where they’re headed. As the duo might say, the noise is never just noise, and the melody is never the whole story.
