December has a way of making people crave warmth, good songs, and a table full of friendly faces. On Saturday, December 5th, Red Bird Brewing delivers all three with an evening of live music in Kelowna featuring the Dan Tait Band and the Cal Volpe Trio.

The Dan Tait Band is a five-piece folk-Americana band from Kelowna, built around songs that make room for people: their joy, their grief, their mistakes, their healing, and the histories they carry with them.

At the heart of the band are the songs of Dan Tait, a songwriter more than twenty years into a life in music. Those years have given him plenty to write about. His songs carry stories of friendship, heartbreak, addiction and sobriety, grief, forgiveness, home, growing older, and the strange beauty of everyday life. Compassion runs through all of it, along with a belief that honest stories can help us understand ourselves and each other.

Today, those songs are finding their way onto theatre and festival stages with a band capable of carrying their quietest moments alongside their biggest, most celebratory ones. Aidan Mayes brings keyboards, vocals, and luminous harmonies. Gary Talman’s melodic guitar work can fill a song with texture or send it soaring. Dustin McGifford anchors the band with melodic bass and a rich third harmony, and Rod Anderson brings sensitivity, instinct, and drive behind the drums. Together with Tait, they draw from folk, Americana, country, and roots-rock, with three-part vocals at the centre of a sound that can hush a room and lift a festival field.

Expect plenty of laughter, stories, singalongs, quiet moments, and big choruses, plus the unmistakable chemistry of five people who genuinely love making music together. Tait grew up with records like Our Lady Peace’s Clumsy and I Mother Earth’s Scenery and Fish, and later found companions in the music of Sam Roberts Band and The Sheepdogs. Now he hopes his own songs can become that kind of companion for someone else. His belief in compassion and presence runs through every show, and as he likes to remind his listeners, “It’s okay to have a hell of a good time while you’re healing.”

Tait has spent more than fifteen years building community through music in the Okanagan, producing concerts and festivals, facilitating workshops, mentoring artists, and organizing major charitable projects. That spirit fits right in at Red Bird, where community drives every decision we make. Simply put, it’s five friends, a deep collection of honest songs, and an invitation to come exactly as you are.

Cal Volpe Trio

Kick off the night with a local trio that found its groove the best way possible: late nights at Kelowna jam sessions.

Cal Volpe (guitar and vocals), Dan (bass), and Nate (drums) locked in fast on funky hip hop grooves, extended blues jams, and iconic rock riffs. Playing songs from Cal’s diverse original catalogue alongside unique interpretations of well-loved covers, the trio communicates in real time with powerful vocals, swinging dynamics, and articulate improvisation. It’s the perfect way to ease into the evening, and a great reminder of how much talent lives right here in the Okanagan.
