Big Prairie Sound, Free Kelowna Show

Kelowna’s favourite community brewery is warming up for a free night of live music on Thursday, October 15th.

Starpainter and Carter Felker are rolling through the Okanagan, and Red Bird Brewing is the spot to catch them, pint in hand, at a community table full of new friends.

Hailing from Lethbridge, Alberta, Starpainter has been a standout voice in the Prairie indie scene since 2019. Led by songwriter and bandleader Joel Stretch, the six-piece band blends cinematic folk, fuzzed-out country rock, and richly textured pop into something that feels equal parts small-town and wide-open highway. Their 2023 sophomore album, Rattlesnake Dream, took them across Canada and all the way to Japan, growing the band from a four-piece into the full six-piece lineup they tour with today. Their forthcoming record, Cayenne Flowerbed (2026), was produced alongside Chris Dadge (known for his work with Alvvays and Chad Vangaalen), layering bright acoustic guitars, searching slide guitar, and inventive percussion over Stretch’s reflective, deeply human songwriting. If you love live music in Kelowna that leans thoughtful, textured, and just a little bit twangy, this is your show.

Opening the night is Carter Felker, a songwriter who proves that less really is more. Felker’s style pairs sharp, economical lyricism with impressive fingerpicking, telling stories of hometown lore, lost love, and hard luck with a dry sense of humour running underneath. Since his 2016 debut album Everyday Life put him on the map across Western Canada, Felker’s songs have found a life beyond his own recordings: Del Barber covered “Everyday Life” on his Juno-nominated album Easy Keeper (2019), and Alberta country artist Shaela Miller recorded “Good Woman” for her LP Big Hair Small City (2021). His newest record, Loser, digs into self-doubt, ego, and being the imperfect one in a relationship, wrapped in the kind of wit and warmth that makes it easy to see yourself in the songs.

Bring your friends and settle in for a night that captures exactly why Red Bird exists: great music, great beer, and good times only.
